 Fig E5: Margin of Safety for airway management. The margin of safety incorporates the risk of the patient suffering harm from hyperaemia due to airway management proving unexpectedly more challenging than anticipated. The maximum anticipated time to establish airway success, the minimum anticipated safe apnoea time and the vulnerability of the patient to harm from hyperaemia should all be considered.
